At 19 years old I caught a one way to ticket to London with my two best friends. We had booked two weeks accommodation in London at the Generator Hostel, and were hoping to find a place to live and get a job within that time. We couldn’t be more wrong! Two weeks turned into four weeks, and after realising that London was just too expensive, we booked a bus to Edinburgh with two other Aussies we had met and lived there for about four months.
But if we had it our way we would have loved to have stayed in London.
This was my first big trip without my parents, and my first time living out of home, so safe to say we had no idea what we were doing, but all three of us fell in love with London :) The fashion, the drinking, the buildings, the lifestyle and the culture all proved to be a recipe for an amazing experience <3 <3 <3
Here are five things that are on the top of my list when travelling through London:
1. Go for a ride on the Hop-on-hop-off bus tour.
So I actually did this on one of my last days in London when my cousin arrived and I was showing her around. It is a great tour to help you establish your bearings and it drops you right outside all of London’s iconic attractions and landmarks. It is a great option, especially if you are only there for a short time.
2. Find an English pub and order a Sunday roast.
Assuming you are there on a Sunday, you really can’t go past a traditional English roast, and what better way to enjoy it than in a traditional English pub with a pint!
3. Do some shopping on Oxford st.
From the moment I arrived in London the unique and quirky fashion style was something that really stood out. It was different to home and with their different seasons all we wanted to do was run straight to the shops. Oxford Street is probably your best bet with endless shops right in the city centre. This, unfortunately, became a bit of a downfall for us and we spent a bit more of our savings than we should have.
4. Watch a broadway musical.
There are literally hundreds going on in London, it is impossible to venture into the city without seeing an advertisement for at least one. They weren’t overly expensive and they add to a great night out.
5. Go on the London Eye.
Out of all the tourist spots in London I think I liked the London Eye the best. You got an amazing view of the whole city and it provided a great photo opportunity :)
